War in Ukraine: 86 Ukrainian drones intercepted near Saint Petersburg

Russian forces intercepted 86 drones in the region around Saint Petersburg, the city where a major investment forum is taking place, regional governor Aleksandr Drozdenko announced this Saturday.

“Saint Petersburg was the target of a large-scale attack carried out by military drones,” said the governor of the city of Saint Petersburg, Aleksandr Beglov. “I ask the residents of Saint Petersburg to stay at home and not go out,” he added. Pulkovo International Airport, south of the city, announced a temporary interruption of traffic, without specifying the reason.

376 Ukrainian drones intercepted during the night

On Wednesday, at the opening of the St. Petersburg Forum, formerly nicknamed the “Russian Davos” in reference to the World Economic Forum, Ukrainian drones struck a nearby oil installation and military site. Guests arriving at the event were greeted with a plume of black smoke in the background.

This Forum ends this Saturday, the day after an intervention by Russian President Vladimir Putin.

In total, the Russian Defense Ministry announced the interception of 376 Ukrainian drones overnight over the country. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said eight drones had been shot down as they headed toward the city.

Drone attack exchanges continue

Ukraine has recently intensified its drone strikes on occupied territories and Russia in retaliation for daily Russian bombings against its territory.

A drone attack also sparked a fire of some 5,000 m2 in a fuel depot in Ust-Labinsk, in the Russian region of Krasnodar, according to local authorities.

In Ukraine, in the Zaporizhia region, a Russian drone attack against “essential and industrial infrastructure” left two dead, according to the local military leader, Ivan Fedorov.

In that of Dnipropetrovsk, targeted “nearly 30 times with drones and artillery”, one person lost his life and three were injured in the district of Kryvyi Rig, indicated the head of the regional military administration, Oleksandr Ghanza.

Ukrainian emergency services also reported drone attacks on the city of Odessa (south), which did not cause any injuries.
