War in the Middle East: Trump castigates the vote "unpatriotic" in Congress aimed at ending the conflict

It was not in front of the national representation, but online that Donald Trump shared his discontent. On his Truth Social platform, the President of the United States criticized this Thursday, June 4, a text approved by the deputies (nouvelle fenêtre)the day before. Ordering the withdrawal of American troops in the war against Iran, this initiative would “unpatriotic”he castigated.

A symbolic vote

“Who would do something so unpatriotic. They know where the negotiations are,” wrote the American president on his social network (nouvelle fenêtre). The Democrats “would rather see our country fail than grant me another victory, among many others”, denounced the American billionaire, who nevertheless still refuses to obtain authorization from elected officials to wage his war in the Middle East. The resolution (nouvelle fenêtre)adopted with the votes of four Republican deputies, however has a primarily symbolic significance, due to the American president’s right of veto.

While the law allows the president to initiate hostilities to respond to an imminent threat, it requires that he obtain authorization from Congress within 60 days. However, at the beginning of May, Donald Trump ignored this deadline by arguing that the conflict, which began on February 28 with American and Israeli strikes, was over due to the ongoing ceasefire. The Democrats dispute this argument and counter that American forces are still engaged there to enforce a blockade of Iranian ports.
