A real tornado hit the Philippe-Chatrier court. Pushed to the third set by Diana Shnaider (25th in the world), Aryna Sabalenka, one of the favorites for the final victory, takes the door in the quarters, Wednesday June 3, after her defeat in three sets (3-6, 7-5, 6-0). The 22-year-old Russian, however, came close to elimination when the world No. 1 served to win the match 5-4.

Tenacious, she took advantage of her opponent’s fragile mentality to release her punches and sink Aryna Sabalenka in the third round. “I contested each point, I fought until the end and it succeededdeclared a euphoric Diana Shnaider on the court after her victory. This is a very special victory for me“, she smiled again. “In the third set, I really found my rhythm“, she also assured.

Diana Shnaider also benefited from the collapse of the Belarusian, who had so far not lost a set during the fortnight. With only one game won in the last 13 played, Aryna Sabalenka fell back into trouble with 57 unforced errors against 26 for her opponent. Like last year in the final against Coco Gauff, she came out alone from a match that she had in her hand.

The native of Minsk first experienced an air gap at the end of the first set while she was serving at 5-1. Then under the irregular gusts of wind, she began to doubt in the second set, undoubtedly too eager to win this quarter-final. Despite her power and her touch on the ball, Aryna Sabalenka increased her gestures of annoyance against herself with each ball in the net or out of bounds.

As in the 2024 edition, the Belarusian will miss the semi-finals of a Major for the second time since her semi-final at the US Open in 2022. For her part, Diana Shnaider, for her first participation in the last four of a Grand Slam, will face the qualifier Maja Chwalinska, who took out another Russian earlier in the day, Anna Kalinskaya.
