HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Twelve high school athletes were inducted into the Hawaii Hall of Honor this past weekend, including Campbell High graduate Ashlyn Jacobsen.
The six-time OIA champion in track and cross country has shattered records at the school.
“You meet people and they're like ‘Oh my god, you're that one girl' and I'm like, ‘Yes I am, I'm so happy that you know that,'†said Jacobsen.
“I have the school record in the 800, the 1,500, the 3K, the 5K and the 4×8. My team holds the school record for that,†she added.
Jacobsen is also a three-time state champion in the 3,000-meter race.
“That's probably my proudest one,†said Jacobsen.
Ashlyn's mom, Danielle Jacobsen, added, “We're like, ‘Could she do it? Like could she actually? And then it's like immediately like she just did it. She just won states.â€
While her talent is undeniable, Danielle Jacobsen says it wasn't always that way.
“We tried out a couple of different sports, but she wasn't very coordinated and she wasn't really good at any of them so she did a couple of 5Ks when she was younger and she was winning for her age group,†said Danielle Jacobsen.
It was then Jacobsen decided to pursue cross country. The more she ran, the faster she fell in love with the sport.
Now, her training includes running more than 30 miles a week.
This past weekend, Jacobsen solidified her legacy as she joined hundreds of talented Hawaii high school athletes in the prestigious Hall of Honor.
“It was so surreal because I was surrounded by some of the most accomplished people in the state, like hearing what they've all done, it's like crazy to even be up here with them,†said Jacobsen.
Danielle Jacobsen said the call about her daughter's induction was a moment the family won't forget.
“She was just so excited, because we look back at some of the people that we saw inducted before, and we're just like you're sitting up here in the same league as these people and you deserve it,†Danielle Jacobsen said.
In the fall, Jacobsen will join the track and cross country team at the University of San Francisco.
As for what she's looking forward to most: not having to run in the hot Ewa Beach sun.
