BTS, the great return

In this episode, we talk about a group that goes beyond just music. A group that fills stadiums, breaks streaming records, shakes platforms, and, most importantly, has changed the way pop music circulates in the world. BTS is back.

After several years of hiatus, partly due to mandatory military service in South Korea, the seven members return with a new album that seems to look back at their roots, at Korean culture, and look towards the future, with a simple question: what more can BTS become today?

We discuss this with Marie Palot, a TV morning show contributor and content creator. Also, Savannah Truong, who runs the KICK Cafe, a meeting place for k-pop fans, and Maiwenn from the BTS Army in France.

The success of BTS is not only based on meticulously produced music but also on their unique journey. Coming from an independent agency, the group has established itself through a hybrid identity, blending hip-hop influences and pop codes while nurturing an unprecedented connection with their international audience that propelled their rise to massive recognition in South Korea.

“The uniqueness of BTS,” explains Savannah Truong, “is that they were pushed by the international scene, by international fans, and after that they were praised in Korea, and it’s actually the first time that a group will be pushed by fans who are strangers compared to the Koreans.”

Behind them are millions of fans, referred to as the ARMY, an organized, engaged community capable of influencing rankings, bringing stories to life, and sometimes even influencing cultural debates. And behind BTS, there is also a larger movement: K-pop, and in the broader sense, this Korean cultural wave that has been reshaping the global pop landscape for several years.
