The Minister of Relations with Parliament, Laurent Panifous, committed this Tuesday to ensuring that the law on the end of life is definitively adopted in the National Assembly on July 15, and confirmed the government’s desire for the extraordinary session to go beyond mid-July.
If the seven deputies and seven senators who must try on Tuesday to find a compromise, in a joint joint committee, “do not agree, which is probable, then we will convene the text the week of June 22 at the National Assembly”, explained the minister on Sud Radio. “He would leave for a few days for a final shuttle, a final back and forth to the Senate and we will give the last word to the deputies on July 15,” he certified.
Session extraordinaire
Laurent Panifous recalled that this bill, resulting from a citizens’ convention and creating a new right to assistance in dying accompanied by multiple conditions, had “for at least four years”, “suffered the vicissitudes of dissolutions, censorships, etc..” The Minister of Relations with Parliament also expressed his wish that the extraordinary session in July lasts “three weeks, three and a half weeks”. It is President Emmanuel Macron who has the last word on the extraordinary convocation of Parliament. “I need that time […] to be able to land all the texts,” insisted Laurent Panifous, referring to the agricultural emergency law, the military programming law, “the everyday security texts” carried by the Minister of the Interior, the law on criminal justice and the protection of minors on social networks.
On the other hand, he estimated that, despite the extraordinary session, the draft constitutional reform of Corsica and the bill on child protection would not have time to go through the Senate. The President of the Senate Gérard Larcher had demanded at the end of May that the parliamentary work not extend beyond the July 14 to allow time for the campaign for the senatorial elections which will be held at the end of September. Laurent Panifous pledged to “ensure that there are, after July 14, only votes, only conclusions of texts and no new texts which are put for debate” in the upper house.
Wauquiez wins his case on security
Guest of TF1 this Tuesday morning, the boss of LR deputies in the Assembly, Laurent Wauquiez, underlined the need to include texts on security, the “primary concern” of the French. In front of the deputies of his group, Laurent Wauquiez assured that he had “won his case” and received confirmation from Matignon of the “rapid inscription of the Regalian texts”, according to a participant.
The text on criminal justice will thus be debated the week of June 29 in the Assembly, the “Ripost” bill on public order and a proposed law on the self-defense of police officers will occupy the week of July 6, and the text on municipal police will be “the first studied at the start of the school year “, affirmed Laurent Wauquiez. Contacted, the Ministry of Relations with Parliament did not confirm.
