REPORTAGE – In 2026, the army should be equipped with more than 15,000 drones. A first step in its long phase of modernization.

A Gazelle flies over the course. The light attack helicopter will carry out a demonstration. The device flies at 120 km/h and crosses the sky as if to surprise an opponent. Inside the cockpit, an operator, wearing FPV glasses that block his eyes, releases a mini-drone with a throw of his hand; the device takes off and changes trajectory, controlled using images transmitted live. Equipped with a charge, it could hit a target a few kilometers further while the operator, in the cabin, guided it.

Not all drone operators are capable of this, as the combination of glasses which cut the individual off from their environment and the hovering flight of the helicopter subjects the inner ear to nausea… But this experimentation will perhaps offer 4e air-combat brigade an additional tactical option. Or it may not be pursued. The future of airborne drone dropping belongs “sans doute à des drones mères”dit-on…
