The United States has deported a new group of migrants from West Africa to Ghana, as part of the Trump administration’s strengthened migration policy.

According to American lawyer Meredyth Yoon, these migrants arrived on Ghanaian territory on Thursday. Their number has not been specified at this stage.

The lawyer claims that at least one of them, a Guinean national, benefited from protection against deportation in the United States. She fears that this man will be sent back to Guinea on Sunday.

Ms. Yoon is also concerned that “all” of the West African nationals concerned “will be returned to their countries of origin as of tomorrow” on Sunday.

Since the start of his second term, Donald Trump has made the fight against illegal immigration a major priority of his administration.

Washington relies in particular on agreements concluded with “third countries”, allowing the transfer of migrants to States with which they sometimes have no direct link.

In this context, Ghana has agreed since last year to temporarily welcome certain West African nationals before their possible return to their country of origin.

This practice has sparked criticism from migrant rights organizations, particularly when the people concerned benefit from legal protection or risk, according to American justice, being persecuted if they return to their country.
