German President denounces a serious political mistake against Iran
The German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier strongly criticized, this Tuesday, the war waged by Israel and the United States against Iran, calling it a “serious political mistake”. According to him, this conflict was unnecessary and could have been avoided if the real objective had been to prevent Tehran from acquiring nuclear weapons.
Speaking in Berlin on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the refoundation of the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Steinmeier noted that Iran had never been further away from the atomic bomb than after the conclusion of the nuclear agreement in 2015. He recalled his own participation in the development of this agreement when he was the Foreign Minister, before the US administration withdrew from it during Donald Trump’s first term.
The German President also called for greater distance from the Trump administration, advocating for a realistic approach focused on European and fundamental interests, without succumbing to external pressures.
He further emphasized the need for a more effective and pragmatic foreign policy, while maintaining a strict and clear commitment to international law.
Frank-Walter Steinmeier also affirmed his refusal to turn a blind eye to violations of international law or to refrain from clearly naming them. He stressed that respect for international laws and conventions is an essential guarantee for the survival of states that are not part of the major powers, and it cannot be abandoned to justify the actions of other parties.
