Donald Trump, still entangled in the Iranian quagmire. While the American president affirmed that Iran was committed not to acquire nuclear weapons, one of the major points of friction in the negotiations between Washington and Tehran to end their war, Iran’s recent declarations once again demonstrate the complexity of the file.
On Sunday, May 31, the President of the Iranian Parliament, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, clarified that Tehran will not accept any agreement with the United States until its rights are fully guaranteed. “We will not approve any agreement until we are certain that the rights of the Iranian people have been fully guaranteed,” said Mr. Ghalibaf, in a video broadcast by state television.
While the two countries seemed, in recent days, to be getting closer to an agreement, the New York Times reported on Saturday that the American president had toughened his proposal and sent a new version of the text to Tehran.

According to the site AxiosDonald Trump wants more firmness in Washington’s position on several aspects, notably the fate of Iranian nuclear materials. For its part, Iran considers the lifting of American sanctions and the release of its frozen assets as part of its fundamental rights, which must be guaranteed in any agreement concluded with the United States.
“Fighters in the diplomatic field do not believe in the words or promises of the enemy,” added Mr. Ghalibaf on Sunday. On social networks, the main Iranian negotiator affirmed “that no action will be taken before the other party acts.”
Since the start of the war, Tehran has maintained strict control, which it claims to maintain, over the very strategic Strait of Hormuz, an essential sea route for the global transport of hydrocarbons. In response, the United States has imposed a naval blockade of its ports and coasts since April 13.
