Cher readers, are we made to get along? Invited to elect the best film of the 21st century, by drawing from the ranking already produced by the cinema department of Télérama (at the cost of many regrets, forgetfulness, arguments and oaths of revenge), you are nearly 4,800 participants who have thrown your votes into the battle. Bravo and thank you, therefore, for this incessant dialogue with the editorial staff, especially since it ultimately gives us the opportunity to agree on the essentials, namely, suspense and drum rolls… number 1 of your Top, major work by a major filmmaker: Mulholland Drive, de David Lynch !

Twenty-five years after its release, this feature film “intoxicating and poisonous, which does enormous harm and great good†, as written Télérama at the time, remains an inexhaustible source of mystery and enchantment. In any case, he comes well ahead of your votes, with 749 votes (16%), quite far ahead of number 2, In the Mood for Love (2000), by Wong Kar-wai, which gains three places, however, compared to the newspaper’s ranking. In third position among readers, Anatomy of a fall, the Palme d’Or 2023, signed Justine Triet, was ranked twenty-second among critics – there is no doubt that the director will appreciate this outpouring of love.

In this monument of subjectivity, memories and mixed feelings, there would of course be cause for debate, even for a fight. What will the inventive and earth-shattering do? The Beaches of Agnès (Agnès Varda, 2008) in exile on the 23rd step of your podium? There will be other votes, fortunately, since we have our lives ahead of us. This leaves time to watch the films again.
