After a drone strike on a building in Galati, on the Ukrainian border, Romanian defense officials explain what slowed down their intervention.
The Romanian army proved powerless in the face of a strike attributed to Russia by Bucharest and carried out on Romanian territory, in a region neighboring Ukraine. The drone, which crashed into a building in the town of Galati, causing a fire and the evacuation of 70 people, had nevertheless been detected by a radar in the national airspace. So why wasn’t it intercepted?
Some senior Romanian officials offered some explanations this Friday morning, during a press conference. According to the spokesperson for the Ministry of National Defense, Cristian Popovici, if the drone was spotted at 1:54 a.m. coming from Reni, Ukraine, it then followed an astonishing trajectory. “He dived from an altitude of 600 meters and made turns for which we are trying to understand the reason”said Popovici. He disappeared from radar south of the town of Galati and a fire was declared on the roof of a building a few minutes later.
