The headquarters of the Portuguese Socialist Party in Lisbon was raided on Thursday May 28 as part of an investigation into embezzlement relating to contracts awarded by municipalities, this political group announced. Portuguese justice, for its part, announced that it had launched a vast operation to investigate acts of embezzlement concerning the awarding of various contracts by municipalities and sub-municipalities of Lisbon, Mafra and Oeiras, also in the region of the Portuguese capital, as well as Coimbra, in the center of the country. These contracts would have been awarded “in clear violation of applicable legal standards and with obvious harm to the public treasury”explained the Judicial Police in a statement.
