Cuba Prepares for Possible U.S. Military Invasion

Carlos Fernandez de Cossio, the Cuban vice minister of Foreign Affairs, warned in an interview on Sunday that Cuba is bracing for a potential invasion by the U.S. army amid a new round of power outages. The interview was broadcast on the American television network NBC. He stated, “Our military is preparing these days for the possibility of a military aggression. Looking at what is happening in the world, we would be naive not to do so.”

However, he expressed hope that such a scenario would not occur, questioning why it would be justified. He emphasized that Cuba does not want conflict with the United States and does not want to worsen relations with Donald Trump. He added, “We have the need and the right to protect ourselves. But we are ready to sit down and talk.”

Washington, which has opposed the communist regime in Cuba since it took power in 1959, intensified economic pressure in January by blocking the island’s supply of hydrocarbons, after overthrowing its main ally, Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro. The U.S. attempted to overthrow Fidel Castro’s regime in 1961 during the failed Bay of Pigs operation.

On Monday, President Donald Trump hinted at possible action against Cuba, saying he believes he will “have the honor of dealing with Cuba.” Authorities on the island were working to restore electricity following yet another national blackout on Saturday night, the seventh in over a year and a half.

Fernandez de Cossio, speaking in the NBC interview recorded before this latest blackout, assured that his government is taking proactive measures to address the situation. He expressed hope that fuel will reach Cuba one way or another and that the U.S. boycott will not last indefinitely.
