Weather damage prompts Auburn Public Schools to cancel classes
First Alert 6 tracked tornadoes and straight-line winds that slammed southeast Nebraska on Monday. Auburn took extensive storm damage, causing Auburn Public Schools to call off classes for Tuesday.
As First Alert 6 crews arrived in Auburn, residents were telling them not to go into town, as it was nearly impossible to navigate with all the debris.
Hundreds were without power Monday as result of the storms, which downed tree limbs throughout the area. OPPD was reporting more than 1,500 without power as of 8:05 p.m.; MidAmerican indicates 360 outages in Council Bluffs at about that same time.
Several tornado and severe weather warnings were issued in southeast Nebraska as the storm system moved through the area until about 7:30 p.m.
Crews encasing streetcar rails in Midtown Omaha on Tuesday morning
Crews will begin encasing streetcar rails in Midtown on Tuesday morning, prompting a temporary closure of Farnam Street.
Farnam will be closed from Turner Boulevard to 33rd Street from 6 a.m. till 10 a.m. Drivers are advised to use 33rd St. or Harney St. to access the Midtown Parking Garages during that time.
On Monday, the intersection of Turner Boulevard and 31st Street closed for approximately two months for water main construction.
Also on Monday, 36th Street closed on the north side of the Farnam Street intersection for the next phase of the Omaha Streetcar project, including track installation and full roadway reconstruction.
On Thursday, 31st Street just north of Marcy Street will close for two weeks to remove water main equipment.
Black Hills Energy, NorthWestern Energy merger vote set for Tuesday
The Nebraska Public Service Commission is set to vote Tuesday on a proposed merger between Black Hills Energy and Northwestern Energy.
The two companies submitted a joint application last October to the commission, saying they want to create one regional electric and natural gas utility company.
The companies said the merger will not change energy service or rates for customers served by Black Hills Energy and NorthWestern Energy. Regulatory oversight by the NPSC will remain unchanged.
If approved, the new combined company would serve more than 2 million customers across eight states. That includes about 350,000 customers across Nebraska.
Malcom X Foundation to unveil renderings on Tuesday
The Malcolm X Memorial Foundation in Omaha is scheduled to unveil architectural renderings of a campus project Tuesday.
The design includes a $40 million cultural center and museum at the Malcolm X historic birthplace in North Omaha.
Mayor Ewing is set to attend the announcement. The public is invited to the unveiling at 10:30 a.m. near 34th and Evans streets.
NSAA reschedules state soccer, baseball championships due to weather
The final round of the Nebraska state high school soccer tournament is set to begin Tuesday after a weather delay.
The Class A and B girls soccer finals were moved to Tuesday. Class B will start first at 4:30 p.m. and Class A will follow, with a projected start time of 8 p.m.
The boys Class A and B finals will follow a similar schedule Wednesday. An official with the NSAA said once the weather outlook became certain, the decision was made to move the matches.
Another round of potential storms is forecast for the end of the week. The NSAA is keeping an eye on the weather as girls state tennis and state track get underway this week.
Big Ten Baseball Tournament in Omaha starts Tuesday
The Big Ten baseball tournament will get underway Tuesday at Charles Schwab Field in Omaha.
This year’s tournament has a new format: starting Tuesday through Thursday, the fifth through 12th seeds will compete in a double-elimination bracket. Four teams will then advance to the quarterfinals, which start on Friday.
The Huskers claimed the No. 2 seed in the tournament, meaning they don’t play until Friday evening. Their opponent will be determined Thursday night.
The tournament kicks off with Michigan State taking on Purdue at 9 a.m.
