The parliamentary group Together for the Republic (EPR, formerly Renaissance), led by Gabriel Attal, announced on Tuesday, February 24 through a press release that they have successfully added their proposal to create a special status for Alsace to the agenda of the National Assembly. Specifically, Gabriel Attal (deputy of Hauts-de-Seine), Brigitte Klinkert (Haut-Rhin), Olivier Becht (Haut-Rhin), Françoise Buffet (Bas-Rhin), and Charles Sitzenstuhl (Bas-Rhin) stated that on Tuesday, April 7, the National Assembly will vote on the re-creation of the Alsace region.
“A historic vote for the future of the Alsatians”
According to Gabriel Attal, “Through our initiative, the Assembly will vote on a historic decision for the future of the Alsatians. For me, the Alsace region represents both a matter of trust in the Alsatian territory and proximity in our public policies.”
In practical terms, the EPR deputies propose giving the European Collectivity of Alsace (CEA) the powers of a region and a department, making it a collectivity with a special status (CSP). The five signatory deputies emphasized, “The goal is clear: efficiency of public action, proximity with the people of Alsace, and recognition of the historical specificities of Alsace.”
In their view, this reform would simplify the layers of regional and departmental administrative management, which are often difficult to understand and detached from local realities, and lead to budgetary savings of around 80 to 100 million euros per year.
