In a forum, 500 elected officials and mayors call on the former Prime Minister to run in the 2027 presidential election.

Some 500 local elected officials, including the president of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region Renaud Muselier or the mayor of Bordeaux Thomas Cazenave, called on Gabriel Attal to run in the 2027 presidential election in a column published Saturday evening by La Tribune Sunday.

“We, local elected officials, representing all our territories in their strength, their diversity, their daily reality, call on Gabriel Attal to be a candidate for the presidency of the Republic”, we can read in this text published by La Tribune Dimanche.

“A tipping point”

Among the signatories are also the mayor of Annecy Antoine Armand, the former minister and mayor of Coulommiers Franck Riester, as well as the president of the Lozère departmental council Laurent Suau, as well as municipal and regional councilors.

Gabriel Attal, a 37-year-old former prime minister, has accelerated his campaign with a series of trips since the release of his book at the end of April, and his Renaissance party has called on him to officially declare himself. He is due to hold a meeting in Paris on May 30.

Right-wing voice: “Attal, Philippe and Knafo prevented the alternation” – 03/16

The elected officials who signed the platform believe that the 2027 presidential election will be a “tipping point” during which they refuse “to see France handed over to the defeatists”.

“Because Gabriel Attal has shown his qualities, that he has the strength of experience, the audacity to propose and the capacity to act: he is, for us, the person that our country needs,” they write.

“Listen, concert”

According to them, the next head of state must know how to “listen, consult”, be “ready to share power” and know how to “bring things together”. Gabriel Attal’s entourage assures that the platform “is only the beginning” and that “this call is open for signature and will continue to grow”.

The number of signatures – around 500 – echoes the number of sponsorships necessary to be a presidential candidate. Mayors, deputies, senators or regional councilors are among those who can provide support.

Gabriel Attal is trying to steal the favorite place in the central bloc currently occupied by Edouard Philippe, also a former Prime Minister and declared candidate since 2024.
