You might expect the streets of Johannesburg to be quieter in the early hours of Saturday morning. After all, people are sleeping in after their long work week or recovering from their Friday night festivities.
The jogging clubs, however, are proof that this city never sleeps. The sun rises and the streets gradually fill with people, some still struggling to sleep, others full of irrepressible excitement.
Although they vary in size and geographic location, all jogging clubs in “Joburg†have one thing in common: the feeling of being part of a community.

A member of the Braamfie Runners says her favorite thing about the club is that it forms a close-knit community.
“We don’t leave anyone behind. Even if some are faster than others, we always regroup after a few minutes.â€
Jogging clubs are known for their warm atmosphere and accessibility. In general, you can show up and run without registration fees or by paying a small fee for occasional events or purchasing club merchandise.
