Despite a first half where Nantes managed to hold the score, Lyon’s OL finally crushed the Canaries (8-0) in the Premier League playoffs semi-final. The Rhodanian team, already cup winners, have advanced to the championship final where they will face the winner of the Paris derby happening Saturday night between Paris FC and Paris Saint-Germain.
After a lackluster first period with many flaws in the offensive play, although they maintained a vast possession advantage (73%), the Lyonnaises significantly stepped up their game and made the difference right after halftime.
8 goals, all in the second half Melchie Dumornay scored a brace (46th and 60th minute) to kick start the scoring, followed by goals from Vicky Becho (50th) and Wendie Renard (53rd) quickly giving the reigning French champions a four-goal lead. Despite being 4th in the regular season, Nantes continued to endure Lyon’s onslaught. Lindsay Heaps scored the fifth goal (67th), and Ada Hegerberg completed a hat-trick (80th penalty, 85th, 90th). However, Nantes missed a chance to score with Mariam Toloba hitting the crossbar (69th).
Now Lyon awaits the Paris FC vs. Paris Saint-Germain match result to determine their opponent in the championship final. The final will take place at Groupama Stadium on May 29th, one week after their Champions League final.
