They organize meetups on social media platforms, ostensibly to party in the streets. Hundreds of adolescents have been flooding public spaces in the US, responding to each online invitation. On May 8th, in Tampa, Florida, one such gathering quickly turned into chaos as clashes erupted without cause, leading the police to intervene, as shown in the eye-opening report on TF1’s 8 PM newscast. 22 individuals were apprehended that evening, with the youngest being just 12 years old.
This spreading phenomenon, known as “teen takeover,” is causing increasing concern among American authorities. James Fishback, a Republican candidate for governor of Florida, described the Tampa incident as a riot, not just a youth gathering. “Participating in these events can lead you into legal trouble and jeopardize your future,” emphasized Susan Lopez, a prosecutor from the southeastern state.

In the video above, more footage shows similar disturbances in broad daylight on April 20th in California, near Hermosa Beach. On May 8th, a shopping center was overrun in Houston, Texas. The Florida police fear more unrest and are calling on parents to assist them. “When large gatherings escalate, it depletes critical resources for other security emergencies,” warned Lee Bercaw, chief of the Tampa police. “We can avoid all this. So we encourage parents to organize activities this summer to keep our families safe,” insisted Thaddeus Bullard, leader of a local family association.
In Washington, DC, a curfew for minors has been implemented nightly until 2028, hoping that by then, teen takeovers will no longer be in vogue. This trend of spontaneous adolescent gatherings appeared massively two months ago in the UK, with alarming consequences. Interestingly, this phenomenon has not gained traction in France. However, it does bring back memories of the “Project X” gatherings in Paris in 2021, which occurred during the Covid crisis and led to multiple police interventions to disperse the crowd.
