At the People’s Palace, a high place of Chinese culture, President Xi Jinping received his American counterpart, Donald Trump, with the grandeur worthy of a millennia-old culture. Besides displaying the trappings of an expanding power, China reveals to the world the splendors of its millennia-old civilization. A symbol of stability in a time when everything seems to change rapidly, China showcases its imperial history, arts, and way of life, as if all of it remains impervious to the passing time. Immutable greatness, heightened patriotism, but also defended interests – this is how the Chinese president speaks to the American head of state.

Regarding the economic openness to US companies, as well as the thorny issue of Taiwan, China flexes its muscles. While being welcoming on an economic level, it knows how to assert itself militarily. The Americans have been warned: the fate of Taiwan will depend on Beijing’s will. The rule represents a sovereign space for China, which intends to reclaim its territory one day.

In the face of President Trump’s power logic (shown notably in Venezuela, Panama, Cuba, and potentially tomorrow in Greenland), the Chinese aim to do the same. Since the fall of the Berlin Wall, territorial protection has not been as strong as now. The logic of power is evident everywhere, whether it’s Russia with Ukraine, China with Taiwan, or the US with the resurgence of the Monroe Doctrine.

While Chinese and American giants confront each other in Beijing, amid cannon fire and military parades, historical pride and waving flags, Brussels seems apathetic, sluggish, and sidelined. Europe, once a dominant world power, transforms into a cold, disembodied technostructure hindering national sovereignty and stifling any attempt to regain power.
