The Barcelona FC prodigy waved a Palestinian flag on Monday, May 11, during the parade celebrating the Spanish football champions title of the Catalan club.
“It’s his choice, he is of legal age”: without defending or condemning him, FC Barcelona coach Hansi Flick expressed mixed feelings on Tuesday about the gesture of his star striker Lamine Yamal, who waved a Palestinian flag during the club’s victory parade on Monday.
“These are not things I usually like” Flick stated in a press conference on Tuesday. During the Blaugranas parade in the streets of Barcelona, the 18-year-old striker, who was second in the Ballon d’Or last year, was seen waving a Palestinian flag from the players’ bus. “We focus on playing football and we must consider what the public expects from us” added Flick.
“Making people happy”
Barcelona won their 29th La Liga title on Sunday, the second consecutive one, by defeating Real Madrid 2-0 at Camp Nou. “When I saw the people in the streets, so moved, it was an incredible feeling. I was very moved” said Flick. “That’s why we are here: to play football, to make people happy”.
