This Tuesday, May 12, at the Croisette, the official poster for the 2026 Cannes Film Festival will be displayed on the fronton and the red carpet will be rolled out on the 24 steps of the legendary Palais des Festivals.
The small town in the Alpes-Maritime will once again be in the spotlight for eleven days. From May 12 to 23, the eyes of moviegoers around the world will be focused on Cannes. The 79ème edition will be broadcast live on France 2 this Tuesday evening, at 7 p.m.
The opening ceremony
For the opening, the successful actress Eye Haïdara was named mistress of ceremonies. She is the first black actress to receive this title in the history of the festival. She will give a speech, accompanied by American violinist Miri Ben-Ari.
At the age of 64, Peter Jackson, director of the adaptation of the Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogy, will be rewarded for his immense box office success during his career. This evening, he will receive the honorary palme d’or.
To finish this opening ceremony, the French singers Théodora and Oklou will cover the songs of the Beatles, of whom Peter Jackson is a fan. Finally, Eye Haïdara will open the cinema.
The first film screened this evening will be “The Electric Venus” by Pierre Salvadori. A French romantic comedy set in the Roaring Twenties with Gilles Lellouche, Pio Marmaï and Anaïs Demoustier in the leading roles.
Many personalities
This year, many cinema personalities will be on the jury: the actress Demi Moore, who played in “The Substance”, the Chinese producer Chloé Zhang, the Belgian director Laura Wandel and the Irish and Ethiopian producer Ruth Negga. The jury will be chaired by Korean director Park Chan-Wook, who has been selected several times by the Cannes Film Festival.
The red carpet at the Palais des Festivals will see many stars pass by: Kristen Stewart, Scarlett Johansson, Adam Drivers, John Travolta, Marion Cotillard, Guillaume Canet, Gilles Lellouche and many others.
For the closing ceremony, Barbra Streisand will receive a special award for her entire career. Actress, director but also singer, at 84 years old, Barbra Streisand has a great track record.
