(Ventura) American singer Britney Spears avoided prison by pleading guilty to reckless driving, after her arrest for driving under the influence two months ago, her lawyer announced Monday.

The 44-year-old artist, absent from the hearing, was sentenced to “12 months of suspended sentence with probation,” explained Michael Goldstein, as part of an agreement reducing the proceedings against him.
She will also have to continue her detoxification treatment, regularly consult a mental health professional, pay a fine and follow 30 hours of training imposed on motorists driving while drunk.
The singer was arrested for drunk driving on the evening of March 4, on a road near her Californian home. After a few hours in the cell, she was released in the early morning.
She then entered into rehab of her own free will.
“She has taken important steps to effect positive change, which is clearly reflected in the Ventura County District Attorney’s decision,” Ms.e Goldstein leaving court.
“Britney appreciates this leniency and is also grateful for the overwhelming support she has received,” he added.

The prosecutor’s office, however, announced its intention to offer a guilty plea agreement, a standard procedure in non-accident cases involving low blood alcohol levels.
“Our goal is not just to hold individuals accountable, but to foster long-term behavior change through treatment and cure,” County Attorney Erik Nasarenko said Monday.
