The 88th edition of the French championship promises to keep us on the edge of our seats until the end. The eight simultaneous matches that concluded the 33rd day of Ligue 1 on Sunday, May 10, kept the suspense alive for the final weekend of competition, even though Paris has all but secured the title. Some dynamics were disrupted, like Lyon’s impressive streak, while the battle to avoid relegation was reignited. Franceinfo: sport summarizes the evening’s events, rich in lessons for the title race, European competition, and survival.

PSG champions, almost

Paris Saint-Germain couldn’t mathematically secure the title yet, but they secured a final victory (1-0) in the last match of the season at home against Brest, following a narrow win over Lens (1-0) that condemned Nantes to Ligue 2 on Friday.

Luis Enrique made significant changes to his starting eleven after the qualification against Bayern Munich, and it showed. Despite controlling possession but lacking threat, Parisian players were held back by solid Brest defenders, who could have even taken the lead in the first half without a good performance from Renato Marin in goal for Paris. However, Desiré Doué found the breakthrough with a solo effort late in the game (83rd minute).

With a six-point lead and a fifteen-goal difference advantage over Lens before the decisive match at Sang et Or (rescheduled from the 29th matchday), PSG is almost champions and only needs a draw to officially secure the title on Wednesday or the upcoming weekend.

Lille climbs to the podium, Monaco and Lyon suffer

In the clash between European contenders, Lille, largely dominant at Louis-II, was rewarded with a crucial victory over Monaco (1-0) thanks to an own goal by Denis Zakaria (72nd minute). With this win, the northerners climb onto the podium.

Meanwhile, further west, Olympique Lyonnais, despite being in good form, were defeated by Toulouse (2-1). Dayann Méthali opened the scoring, but the Lyon equalized only to concede a late winner. They are now fourth, under threat from Rennes, just a point behind.

Rennes remains in the Champions League race with a stunning comeback against Paris FC (2-1). An excellent first half was followed by a surprise from Antoine Kombouaré’s men, but Rennes turned the game around in two minutes with goals from Esteban Lepaul and Breel Embolo.

The defeat for Monaco delighted Marseille, who bounced back with a narrow win over Le Havre (1-0). Thanks to a penalty converted by Mason Greenwood, Marseille now sits in sixth place.

Nice on the brink, Auxerre out of the relegation zone

Travelling to Auxerre, Nice needed to avoid defeat to stay ahead of their opponents. Despite an early goal by Sofiane Diop, they eventually fell to a 2-1 loss, allowing Auxerre to move ahead in the relegation battle.

Le Havre, now only a point above the promotional playoff spot, is still at risk after the loss to Marseille. Angers, with a draw against Strasbourg, secured their spot in the top flight.
