France Ranks 5th in AI Use Worldwide

France is among the top countries in AI usage, ranking 5th globally. Nearly half of working-age French citizens (48%) have used AI tools, according to a Microsoft-led study. Compared to population, France leads in AI usage, far ahead of the United States at only 21%.
But how to interpret such a ranking? “Usage has spread a lot here, we have curiosity but we each use AI a bit on our own. It’s tinkering, without being certain that the use is effective,” explains Catherine André, an economy journalist at LCI.

According to an Insee study, by 2024 only 10% of companies were using AI, with 33% for large corporations. “We were behind compared to the European average,” adds the journalist. “Without effective employee training and without companies truly embracing the tool, there cannot be economic benefits. Especially since there are still many questions about the productivity gains linked to AI.”
