The American way of life no longer appeals? Three quarters of Europeans have a negative opinion of the United States, according to a large survey published this Friday. A figure that has jumped in recent months.
Compared to last fall, the proportion of Europeans with a favorable opinion of the United States (74%) has risen by 14 points, according to this Eurobarometer, a survey conducted in the 27 European states. They are just as likely to see the EU as a “force of stability in an uncertain world.”
By comparison, 83% of EU citizens have a negative opinion of Russia, 61% of China, and 41% of India. Europeans now only have a 24% positive view of the United States.
Should this be seen as an effect of the tariffs imposed by Donald Trump? Desires of the American president for Greenland, or even a form of frustration linked to the war his administration is waging in the Middle East? Asked about this issue, the European Commission refused to interpret the survey. “As you know, the United States is an important partner for us, and we work with them constructively on all the common issues we share,” said spokesperson Arianna Podesta.
Furthermore, Europeans are very supportive (81%) of the idea of a common defense and security policy within the bloc, the highest in 20 years. The survey was conducted from mid-March to early April, across the 27 EU member states. More than 26,000 EU citizens were interviewed.
