According to consistent sources from L’Équipe, Maxifoot, Le Progrès, and Footmercato, an agreement is close to being finalized: Afonso Moreira’s contract, initially set to expire in June 2029, would be extended by an additional season, until 2030, with a significant salary increase to reflect his new status within the club.

No official announcement has been made yet, but all sources are converging: the deal is essentially done. Lyon wants to secure its asset before the market heats up.

Economically, Moreira’s case is a shining example of what a targeted and bold recruitment can produce. In less than a year, his market value has multiplied by twenty. The most serious estimates place him between 37 and 40 million euros, while Transfermarkt, more conservative in its evaluations, still stands at 10 million. In any case, for a Lyon club navigating turbulent financial waters, this latent added value represents a considerable cushion – and proof that the recruitment team still has a bright future ahead.

The player has already made his decision

What may have most motivated Lyon to act quickly is the player’s public declaration himself. On April 25th, Afonso Moreira was crystal clear: “I am very happy here. I want to reach the Champions League with Lyon, it’s important for the club and for me.” Rare words in modern football, where prominent players often communicate ambiguously. Here, the message was clear. Lyon heard it – and responded promptly.

At 20 years old, Afonso Moreira is no longer a promise. He is a reality in French football. And now, he will be until 2030.
