Some bets turn into strokes of genius. In July 2025, Olympique Lyonnais spent two million euros to snatch Afonso Moreira from the reserve team of Sporting Portugal. Ten months later, the 20-year-old Portuguese winger is now valued between 37 and 40 million euros on the market, drawing interest from several European clubs – and Lyon is preparing to extend his contract until 2030. The loop is closed. The masterstroke is being written.
Few people knew Afonso Moreira when Lyon’s leaders took a chance on him last summer. A Portuguese U20 international, the player was still playing for Sporting Lisbon’s B team, with little professional playing time to his name. Lyon negotiated a 20% interest clause on any future profit – a usual precaution for this type of bet on the future. No one expected this clause to become theoretical so quickly.
Because Moreira didn’t just confirm the hopes placed in him: he exceeded them. In 24 Ligue 1 matches this season, averaging 68 minutes per game, the left winger scored 3 goals and provided 6 assists. In all competitions, in 35 matches, the tally rises to 8 goals and nearly a dozen assists. Solid numbers, but they only tell part of the story. It’s in high-stakes matches – against Rennes, against PSG – that Moreira revealed another dimension: that of a player capable of making the difference when the pressure is at its peak.
Lyon acts quickly to put an end to rumors
His performances obviously haven’t escaped the European radars. Several clubs are closely monitoring the Portuguese’s progress, and the summer transfer window promises to be eventful. It is precisely to put an end to any speculation that Lyon has decided to accelerate discussions regarding an extension. According to consistent sources from L’Équipe, Maxifoot, Le Progrès, and Footmercato, an agreement is close to being finalized: Afonso Moreira’s contract, initially set to expire in June 2029, would be extended by an additional season, until 2030, with a significant salary increase to reflect his new status within the club.
No official announcement has been made yet, but all sources are converging: the deal is essentially done. Lyon wants to secure its asset before the market heats up.
An investment of 2 million now worth twenty times more
Economically, Moreira’s case is a shining example of what a targeted and bold recruitment can produce. In less than a year, his market value has multiplied by twenty. The most serious estimates place him between 37 and 40 million euros, while Transfermarkt, more conservative in its evaluations, still stands at 10 million. In any case, for a Lyon club navigating turbulent financial waters, this latent added value represents a considerable cushion – and proof that the recruitment team still has a bright future ahead.
The player has already made his decision
What may have most motivated Lyon to act quickly is the player’s public declaration himself. On April 25th, Afonso Moreira was crystal clear: “I am very happy here. I want to reach the Champions League with Lyon, it’s important for the club and for me.” Rare words in modern football, where prominent players often communicate ambiguously. Here, the message was clear. Lyon heard it – and responded promptly.
At 20 years old, Afonso Moreira is no longer a promise. He is a reality in French football. And now, he will be until 2030.
