How can one justify what appears to be a full-fledged war? In the days following the launch of the “Epic Fury” operation on February 28th, several members of the Trump administration spoke out to list the reasons that led the United States to bomb Iran near Israel. To denounce the danger posed to the region by Tehran, accused of seeking nuclear weapons, emphasis was placed on the regime’s religious “fanaticism”. “This whole regime is run by radical clerics who do not make geopolitical decisions. They make decisions based on theology, their vision of theology, which is apocalyptic,” said Secretary of State Marco Rubio. On the same day, his counterpart Pete Hegseth, Secretary of Defense, echoed the same sentiment: “Crazy regimes like Iran, obsessed with Islamic prophetic delusions, cannot possess nuclear weapons. It’s a matter of common sense.”

Does it really make sense? Coming from the Maga camp, the condemnation of an Iranian adversary subject to an apocalyptic worldview, fueled by end-of-world prophecies, is surprising. For a significant portion of its evangelical base, what is happening in the Middle East is precisely seen through an eschatological lens, from a very particular interpretation of biblical texts.
