The Return of Comedy Films at the Cinema la Rotonde
With the arrival of sunny days comes the next cycle of films to be screened by members of the Val-Pléneuf-Val-André cinema club, at the Rotonde cinema. For the first time, the May screenings will be dedicated to the comedy genre.
The Big Lebowsky in the spotlight
The cinema club members, Arnaud Le Mounier, Gaylord Lambert, Hervé Mauxion and Eloi Gaillard, aimed to cover comedy in a broad sense. A mix of cult, confidential, American, and French films.
On Tuesday, May 5th and Sunday, May 10th, The Big Lebowski will be featured. A cult film by the Coen brothers released in 1998, starring Jeff Bridges.
“It is one of the most well-known with a character that is completely immersed in culture. We hope that this will attract younger audiences,” wonders Arnaud Lemounier.
Four films, four guys, each choosing their own.
The spotlight will then shift to the highly controversial director, Woody Allen, and his film Annie Hall.
“It’s Woody Allen’s first major success,” recalls Eloi Gaillard. The comedy, which won four Oscars in 1978 (best film, best director, best screenplay, and best actress), will be shown on Tuesday, May 12th and Sunday, May 17th.
“A more French-style humor”
The third film, screened on Tuesday, May 19th and Sunday, May 24th, will be The Party by Blake Edwards released in 1968. Arnaud Lemounier describes it as: “A closed-door setting with very little dialogue. A film more for cinephiles, but among the best comedies of cinema.”
The director of The Party is also behind the successful film The Pink Panther.
We always try to feature a slightly lesser-known film.
Finally, the last film to be shown at the Pléneuf-Val-André casino screen on Tuesday, May 26th and Sunday, May 31st will be We’ve Seen It All. “We absolutely wanted a film with Jean-Pierre Marielle,” says Gaylord Lambert. “It’s a more French-style humor, we’ll see if it appeals.”
The goal of the Val cinema club is also to retain its audience after the success of the last cycle on westerns in March.
The group of four cinephile teachers was pleased with the recent attendance: “There were between 30 and 40 people in the audience on Tuesdays and between 15 and 20 people on Sundays.”
Cinema La Rotonde, 1, rue Winston Churchill in Pléneuf-Val-André. Films shown on Tuesdays at 8:30 pm and Sundays at 5:30 pm. Price: €4 per session.
