The cupboard in which FC Porto keeps its Portuguese championship titles is overflowing. The club has just acquired its 31st title on Saturday by beating Alverca 1-0 on the 32nd matchday. They succeed Sporting, the former title holder, who currently sits in third place. The winning goal was scored by Polish player Jan Bednarek with a header in the 40th minute.

Porto now has a nine-point lead over historic rival Benfica, with two games left and can no longer be caught. The capital club was held to a 2-2 draw by Famalicao earlier in the matchday.

A new title for Thiago Silva

Porto’s squad includes Portuguese national team goalkeeper Diogo Costa as well as players with experience in Ligue 1 such as Nigerian Terem Moffi, who came from Nice in the last winter transfer window, and Ivorian Seko Fofana, who previously played for Lens and Rennes.

The club also recruited former PSG and Brazilian star Thiago Silva this winter, after his season with Fluminense ended. The 41-year-old center-back has played seven matches since January but did not play in the title-winning match against Alverca.

Our Football file Former FC Porto coach Jose Mourinho, with whom they won the Champions League in 2004 and who now manages Benfica, congratulated the deserving winner on their title.
