A gunman stormed a security checkpoint at the White House correspondents’ dinner at the Washington Hilton, leading to an exchange of gunfire with law enforcement. President Trump and other officials were evacuated as the Secret Service intervened. The suspect, identified as Cole Tomas Allen from California, had checked into the hotel the day before. Allen is expected to be charged in court today after leaving a manifesto targeting Trump administration officials.
President Trump responded defensively in a ’60 Minutes’ interview when confronted with excerpts from the suspect’s manifesto, denying any connections to the allegations. He used the incident to promote a new ballroom at the White House and pressured the National Trust for Historic Preservation to drop a lawsuit against his $400 million ballroom project in the aftermath.
In a separate incident on Sunday near Indiana University, nine people were injured in a mass shooting.
