The screening of the film “Behind the Flags” by Juanjo Pereira, this Thursday evening at the cinema La Rivière, will be followed by a discussion with representatives from Amnesty International Lorient Quimperlé. This documentary questions the systematic fear that has reduced Paraguay to a silence that still persists today; a silence deeply rooted in the veins of a rural country where the police still suppress any attempt at demonstration, and where the children of the Stroessner dictatorship leaders (1954-1989) still hold power.
The film stems from a deep desire to break this silence and at the same time to challenge the glorification of Stroessner and his 35-year dictatorship. The use of irony, ridicule, and humor is one of the few weapons to confront these monsters and their legacy. The film holds up a mirror that reflects, on one hand, how Western countries complicitly supported this bloody regime for strategic and economic reasons. On the other hand, the dark past resonates with our troubled present.
