The disappearance of a hiker in Chamonix ended tragically. Found in serious hypothermia after a fall in the Aiguilles Rouges massif, the 21-year-old man has been declared dead at the Annecy hospital.
A hiker missing since Friday, March 13, was found on Sunday, March 15 by the Chamonix mountain gendarmerie squad (PGHM) as reported by France 3 Auvergne Rhône-Alpes.
Unconscious upon the arrival of the rescuers, the 21-year-old man had fallen near the Arlevé bridge, on the west side of the Aiguilles Rouges massif according to Ici Chamonix-Mont-Blanc.
Transported in a state of severe hypothermia to the hospital in Annecy, the young victim was declared dead in the afternoon.
“He was declared dead at the hospital, he was exhausted. They tried to revive him, but it didn’t work,” said Jonathan Ferré, an officer from the Chamonix PGHM.
The hiker’s phone had been last located between the summit of the Index chairlift and Lake Blanc in the Aiguilles Rouges massif (Haute-Savoie).
Found in a state of severe hypothermia, the young hiker, who had set out alone with snowshoes, “would have fallen between Saturday night and Sunday,” according to Jonathan Ferré.
Since Friday, teams have been mobilized to find the young man. The search continues.
Thanks to the call for witnesses launched on social media, the search by the Chamonix PGHM was refined to focus on him.
He had deviated from his planned hike and had gone further than his initial itinerary.
