War in Ukraine: Zelensky accuses Russia of nuclear terrorism 40 years after Chernobyl

New Russian bombardments in Ukraine on Sunday killed at least three people, after particularly intense strikes the day before. President Volodymyr Zelensky accused Russia of “nuclear terrorism” on the 40th anniversary of the Chernobyl accident. “The world must not allow this nuclear terrorism to continue, and the best way to stop it is to compel Russia to stop its irresponsible attacks,” Zelenksy declared in reference to the war triggered by the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

Worst civilian nuclear disaster

Russia is “once again leading the world to the brink of a man-made catastrophe,” he added, noting that Russian drones regularly fly over Chernobyl and that one of them hit its protective shell last year. As Ukraine commemorates the 40th anniversary of the worst civilian nuclear disaster in history at Chernobyl, authorities announced early morning Russian strikes targeting infrastructure in the regions of Chernihiv (north) and Odesa (south), with no immediate reported casualties.
