The Americans will try to reclaim victory against a European team that has dominated the competition for three decades.

Furyk would be the fourth American captain to get a second chance since 1979, considered the beginning of the modern era of the Ryder Cup with the integration of continental Europe.

Three sources close to the matter indicated that the Ryder Cup committee had chosen Furyk after Tiger Woods withdrew from the competition following his arrest for driving under the influence on March 27. They requested anonymity because the PGA of America has not made an announcement on this matter yet.

Furyk was the captain in 2018 in Paris at the Golf National, during another dominant victory for Europe, marked by a 2-10-0 record by the four American captain’s picks.

Europe had established a record-breaking seven-point lead after two days of competition last year at Bethpage Black, and they maintained their advantage to secure their second consecutive victory under the captaincy of Luke Donald, who will return for a third consecutive time as captain in Ireland.
