The Justice Department has abandoned a criminal investigation into the Federal Reserve and its chair, Jerome Powell, regarding a renovation project at the central bank’s Washington headquarters. U.S. Attorney for D.C. Jeanine Pirro stated that the Inspector General for the Federal Reserve has been asked to review the building costs overruns in the billions of dollars that have been paid by taxpayers. Pirro has closed the criminal investigation while the Inspector General conducts its inquiry, but she mentioned the possibility of restarting it if necessary. The inspector general previously reviewed the project and found no wrongdoing, although Powell requested a review in 2025 amid pressure from President Donald Trump and his allies. The White House and Senate are now looking to confirm Kevin Warsh as chair of the Fed, as previous confirmation efforts were hindered by the investigation into Powell. The Federal Reserve did not comment on Pirro’s announcement, but the White House remains confident in Warsh’s confirmation. The investigation focused on the renovation of two historic buildings owned by the central bank, which saw costs rise due to unforeseen changes, increased materials costs, as well as asbestos and sinkhole discoveries. Trump and his allies used the project to criticize Powell’s management of the Fed, with tensions escalating during a visit to the construction site where Trump confronted Powell about rising costs. The controversy surrounding the project led to subpoenas served to the Fed from Pirro’s office, resulting in a block on Fed nominees by Sen. Tillis. The case was eventually blocked by Chief Judge James Boasberg, who found no evidence of wrongdoing by Chair Powell.
