Doping in sport is not just a concern in professional circles, reveals a study by Inserm published on April 24, 2026. Amateurs also consume doping products.

In high-level sports, according to blood or urine test results, doping affects less than 5% of athletes, but this proportion can rise to 30% in certain disciplines, such as endurance or strength sports.

The most commonly used doping products are anabolic steroids that increase muscle power, used by both professionals and amateurs. Among users of anabolic steroids, the risk of heart problems is tripled compared to non-users. One in five athletes uses them among gym-goers, as indicated in the report, which also highlights the use of painkillers and anti-inflammatories.

Beware of dietary supplements

Finally, at least 60% of athletes use dietary supplements such as vitamins, proteins, amino acids, or caffeine to improve their performance or recovery. However, in half of cases, these products can result in a positive outcome in anti-doping controls.

These dietary supplements are far from harmless, according to Inserm, as some of them contain illicit substances. One in ten gym users could be exposed to tainted supplements.

Experts warn of health problems associated with the use of these doping products, as they can lead to cardiac, renal, hormonal, neurological, or psychological issues in some cases.
