Ninja + Kabuki Tokyo takes place in one of the rooms of the Warp Shinjuku nightclub, in the very touristy and entertainment district of Kabukicho, north of Shinjuku’s JR station and close to the Gracery Hotel (the one with Godzilla on top). Several performances take place every weekday, accommodating around 50 spectators in the basement.

The concept of Ninja + Kabuki Tokyo has been around since August 2024 and aims to combine several types of traditional Japanese arts, reinterpreting them to make them accessible to a diverse audience. It is directed by Denjiro Tanaka, a master of kabuki music who is both an interpreter and composer from a long line of Noh and Kabuki theater musicians.

The show includes performances featuring Japanese drums (wadaiko), sword fights, traditional dance (nihon buyo), and a demonstration of ninja techniques. The attraction is supported by the Japan Ninja Council, an organization established to promote tourism related to ninja folklore and culture.

The scenes are dialogue-free, and the understanding of the story relies on the actors’ interpretation, sometimes with a few words in English projected at key moments in the plot. Therefore, speaking Japanese is not necessary, and spectators of all ages and backgrounds can enjoy the show.

The small basement room at Warp Shinjuku can accommodate between 50 and 100 spectators. The stage is modern, with white canvases for video projections and special effects in the background.

The plot of Ninja + Kabuki Tokyo revolves around the popular myth of the battle between the tiger and the dragon. These two creatures, representing the principles of yin and yang, are showcased through dynamic performances, traditional music, and dramatic interpretations.

The show combines traditional arts, the ninja warrior world, and theatrical interpretation, drawing from Kabuki traditions but in a more modern and dynamic manner.

Audiences experience complete immersion through lighting effects, video projections, and powerful sound systems. The intimate setting allows for close interaction with the actors and acrobats, creating a captivating experience for all viewers.

Ninja + Kabuki Tokyo is recommended for a cultural and entertaining experience while visiting one of Tokyo’s most touristy districts. It offers a unique outing for friends and families, including children, with its 80-minute runtime free of dull moments.
