It is safe to say that Donald Trump has dreadful relationships with journalists and the media. Since his return to the White House in January 2025, “he has sued press organizations, threatened to imprison journalists, and repeatedly suggested withdrawing their broadcasting licenses from television networks that aired reports he didn’t like,” notes The Atlantic.
Moreover, the White House tenant does not hesitate to shower media representatives with insults through every possible channel, and he particularly enjoys “calling journalists the enemy of the people,” the magazine recalls.
So when Donald Trump announced in early March that he planned, for the first time in his presidency, to attend the gala dinner organized on Saturday, April 25 by the White House Correspondents’ Association, a tradition dating back a hundred and five years, the entire journalism community in the capital was surprised, and “the prospect of seeing President Trump deliver a speech at this gala raises uncomfortable questions,” explains The New York Times.
What kind of message will this president, who has sued, threatened, and demonized the media, “be able to deliver?”
