Winter Games 2030: 4 questions on the Muselier

The new mayor, Eric Ciotti, opposes covering the roof of the Allianz Riviera in Nice to host the ice hockey events of the 2030 Winter Games in the French Alps. The standoff is not an Olympic discipline, but the Cojop might change its mind. After the battle between the Val d’Isère and Courchevel resorts over alpine skiing – still unresolved – it is in Nice where the issue of Olympic sites is causing tension.

Since Eric Ciotti’s election, the case of Allianz Riviera, slated for hockey events, has been in a “blocked situation,” as denounced by Renaud Muselier, president of the South-Provence-Alps-Côte d’Azur region and the origin of the Olympic bid of the French Alps. He announced a deadlock before the end of April. Franceinfo: sport provides an update.

Before the South-PACA region partnered with the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region (AURA), Nice was expected to host the 2030 Olympics, while Christian Estrosi was mayor. Although the two regions eventually joined forces under the banner “French Alps 2030,” the Bay of Angels remained a central point for the Winter Games. Nice was set to host figure skating, ice hockey, short track, curling, a Olympic village, media center, and the closing ceremony.

To do this, Nice had committed to building a ice rink, while the Allianz Riviera, OGC Nice’s stadium owned by the city and built for Euro 2016, was to host the hockey tournament. A temporary cover would have been installed to close the roof of the 36,000-seat stadium.
