A film that will excite fans of the video game “Elden Ring.” The dark fantasy masterpiece set in an open world created by the Japanese studio FromSoftware (originator of a whole new genre highly appreciated as part of its “Dark Souls” series) will be adapted for the big screen. This news will certainly interest the approximately 30 million players who have purchased the game since its release in 2022.

The renowned studio A24 is leading this considerable project. Known for fostering outstanding independent American cinema, they have tasked the screenwriter and director Alex Garland with the responsibility. A24 and the director have previously collaborated, notably on the science fiction movie “Ex Machina” starring Alicia Vikander and Oscar Isaac, which received critical and public acclaim upon its release in 2014.

Alex Garland has already demonstrated a particular talent for adapting ambitious works of imagination. He wrote the screenplay for “Never Let Me Go” (adaptation of the novel by Nobel laureate Kazuo Ishiguro, featuring Keira Knightley, Andrew Garfield, and Carey Mulligan) and directed “Annihilation” (based on the novel by Jeff VanderMeer, starring Natalie Portman), both films in the science fiction genre, which is his preferred area. This time, the British director will have to exchange robots and scientists for knights and mages.

The studio’s involvement is a promising sign for fans hoping for a high-quality film. In the past, A24 has contributed to the emergence of visually striking works such as “Spring Breakers,” “Under The Skin,” “Enemy,” “The Lobster,” and more recently, “Marty Supreme,” “The Brutalist,” “La Zone d’intérêt,” and “A Ghost Story.” Many renowned directors have benefitted from the studio’s patronage and support, including Steve McQueen, Sofia Coppola, Luca Guadagnino, Celine Song, Spike Lee, Darren Aronofsky, Yorgos Lanthimos, and Gus Van Sant. In the fantasy genre, A24 also had success with “The Green Knight” starring Dev Patel, released in 2021.

A Herculean Effort

The studio announced on Monday, April 20, that the film will be released in theaters in 2028, specifically on March 3. Fans will need to exercise patience, especially considering the potential delays associated with grand fantasy projects during filming and post-production. The movie will be shot using Imax technology, allowing for capturing a wider image, similar to what was seen in Denis Villeneuve’s “Dune” saga.

The full cast has been officially announced. Kit Connor, known for the Netflix series “Heartstopper,” was confirmed after weeks of speculation. He will be joined by Ben Whishaw from the latest “James Bond” movies as Q, Cailee Spaeny from “Alien: Romulus” and Alex Garland’s “Civil War,” Tom Burke from “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga,” and several other talented actors and actresses whose roles have not been specified.

Another piece of good news for fans is the return of the narrative architect of the game “Elden Ring,” the writer George R. R. Martin known for the “Game of Thrones” saga, who will be part of the production team. His expertise is expected to be invaluable in navigating the dark and enigmatic universe of the game.

“Elden Ring,” which allowed players to embody an unnamed and unranked hero traversing a world torn apart by disputes among gods and demigods of the Midrealm, provided the basis for the game. Traveling through this tumultuous kingdom, where a spectacular golden tree taller than a mountain reigns, the main character embarks on a quest for a magical symbol divided into several pieces, the Elden Circle. This divine rune has been corrupted by its new owners, descendants of Queen Marika, the sole deity of this world who disappeared under mysterious circumstances.

Magical elements, epic battles, enigmatic dialogues, and complex characters were the hallmarks of the video game. A storyline that could consume over 200 hours of gameplay will now have to be reimagined for the big screen, where Alex Garland will have limited time to captivate the audience. To ensure success, A24 has invested heavily, granting the director their biggest budget yet: over $100 million.
