The President of the Republic, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, delivered a candid diagnosis of the international situation at the opening of the 7th General Conference of Ambassadors and Consuls General of Senegal, held this Saturday in Dakar.
Facing the diplomatic corps, the Head of State described a world marked by “major geopolitical turbulence” and various challenges. Amid armed conflicts, tensions between nuclear powers, global economic crisis, and climate change, he warned of a gradual deterioration of the international order.
In his speech, Bassirou Diomaye Faye particularly emphasized the risks of fragmentation, including within African community spaces, while denouncing the questioning of fundamental principles of international law. He notably pointed out “the trivialization of unilateral use of force,” in contradiction with the ideals upheld by the United Nations.
The Senegalese President also condemned any hierarchization of human lives, asserting Senegal’s rejection of any “double standards” logic. This stance is rooted in a humanistic vision of international relations, where human dignity must remain central.
In this uncertain context, the Head of State advocated for a more equitable global order based on justice, peace, and security. He reaffirmed Senegal’s commitment to champion universal causes “clearly and decisively,” while strengthening its involvement in sub-regional and continental dynamics.
Convinced of Africa’s strategic role in reshaping the world, Bassirou Diomaye Faye called for increased commitment to African integration and collective mobilization to make the continent’s voice heard on the international stage.
Regarding multilateralism, the President of the Republic believed it should remain the preferred framework for international action, while acknowledging the need for reform. He argued for a global governance that is “more equitable, representative, and better suited to contemporary realities,” with a reinforced role for Africa.
On the climate front, Senegal aims to continue its commitment to a fair energy transition based on the principle of common but differentiated responsibility. The Head of State also reiterated the country’s attachment to respecting cultural diversity, an essential condition for peaceful coexistence among peoples.
Furthermore, Bassirou Diomaye Faye highlighted the strategic role of the Senegalese diaspora, now fully integrated into the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ scope of action. He announced ongoing efforts to modernize mechanisms for managing this community, while enhancing its contribution to national development.
Finally, the president emphasized the need for a more effective and coordinated diplomacy, urging to avoid scattering initiatives. He urged diplomats to demonstrate rigor, commitment, and excellence, while ensuring the state continues to modernize the diplomatic apparatus.
Concluding his intervention, Bassirou Diomaye Faye officially opened the 7th General Conference of Ambassadors and Consuls General, expressing hope that their work will lead to concrete proposals and a roadmap in line with Senegal’s diplomatic ambitions.
