It is a provocation to the Americans, to urge Europe to take its responsibilities. The Vice President of the United States JD Vance declared, this Wednesday, that the suspension of American military aid to Ukraine was “one of the greatest achievements of the Trump administration”.

“One of the things I am most proud of in this administration is telling Europe that if they want to buy weapons, they can, but the United States will no longer buy weapons to send to Ukraine,” he said at an event organized by Turning Point USA.

“Europe must accelerate”

In the wake of his somewhat provocative remarks, the highest political official in the Pentagon, Elbridge Colby, warned that future military support to Ukraine cannot depend on the United States, thus putting pressure on the Old Continent.

“Europe must accelerate its assumption of primary responsibility for the conventional defense of the continent,” he said. “This is not a choice, but a strategic necessity,” he added in a speech delivered this week in Berlin by the Contact Group on Ukraine Defense and published Thursday night on X.

As reported by Politico, American military aid to Ukraine has virtually disappeared under the presidency of Donald Trump. According to the Kiel Support Tracker, it decreased by 99% in 2025.

Washington is now willing to sell weapons to Kiev, only if they are financed by other allies under the “Ukraine Priority Needs List” program led by NATO. The program has so far raised 3.7 billion euros last year for the purchase of weapons.
