Stefano Domenicali, the Italian head of Formula 1, has taken the drivers who criticize the new rules introduced this season to task.

In an interview with Autosport, Domenicali warned the drivers, including Dutch champion Max Verstappen, to “respect a sport” that has made them rich and famous. He emphasized the importance of protecting the sport and its core values.

The International Automobile Federation (FIA) implemented new regulations this season, such as 50/50 electric and thermal engines, to improve overtaking and enhance the spectacle of racing. However, the new cars have divided opinions among drivers, with Verstappen likening them to the video game “Mario Kart” and calling it “electric Formula E on steroids.”

Verstappen, known for his candidness, has expressed frustration with his Red Bull car and even threatened to leave Formula 1 for endurance races. Domenicali acknowledged Verstappen’s concerns but stressed the need to avoid falling into antagonisms.

The F1 world is using the recent cancellations of the Bahrain and Saudi Arabian GPs to discuss adjustments to the hybrid engines, focusing on managing electrical energy and differences in speeds during overtaking and braking. These corrections may be announced before the Miami GP on May 1st.
