With the Jazz 70 association, the Christian-Liger Theater in Nîmes welcomes clarinetist Louis Sclavis, a prominent figure in the French jazz scene.
Since the 1970s, clarinetist Louis Sclavis has been an essential figure in the French jazz scene. A nomad, he has explored various universes, sounds, and traditions. An extraordinary musician, he arrives at the Christian-Liger Theater on Thursday, April 16, with his quintet and his new project “India.”
“I have distant memories of a theater on the docks of Calcutta, a long train through the countryside, a night at Kali Temple, a brass band during the Ganesh holidays,” recalls the musician, who will be accompanied by Sarah Murcia on double bass, Benjamin Moussay on piano, Christophe Lavergne on drums, and trumpeter Olivier Laisney, who joins the band for this project.
A Dreamlike Journey
Throughout his rich career, Louis Sclavis has crossed paths with Henri Texier, Michel Portal, or Bernard Lubat, alternating between different styles, performing at major festivals, showing interest in both free jazz and distant rhythms with the iconic “Carnet de route” and “Suite africaine.”
Through this new dreamlike journey, Louis Sclavis continues the adventure with curiosity and enthusiasm. “The sound of this orchestra allowed me to explore themes from both the jazz and the world of brass bands or street ensembles. This music is made of melodies, dances, and improvisations supported by pulsations and persistent rhythms.”
