Chicago’s South Side to welcome new educational science space, Scitopia Chicago

CHICAGO – A new science education center and destination, called Scitopia Chicago, is set to transform a vacant lot on Chicago’s South Side into a dynamic science hub with a focus on teenagers. The announcement was made during an event at the University of Chicago Fossil Lab in Washington Park.

Located next to the Garfield Green Line Station, Scitopia Chicago will offer interactive science experiences for students, including a library, laboratories, live animals, dinosaur fossils, and an Imaginarium. The goal is to provide students with hands-on exposure to science outside the traditional classroom setting.

Paul Sereno, a paleontologist and explorer, explained the vision behind Scitopia Chicago, describing it as a place that will attract visitors of all ages with its unique combination of science, live plants, animals, and a nod to the neighborhood’s historic jazz scene.

With support from 3rd Ward Alderman Pat Dowell, the project is moving forward, with groundbreaking expected in January 2028 and a planned opening for visitors in May 2029. The center will offer free admission to ensure accessibility to all.
