An octogenarian French woman, who was married to an American man, was arrested and detained in Louisiana, according to her family. The woman, who was supposed to get married in 2025, had been residing in Alabama. Her son confirmed that she was taken into custody by the Immigration Police on April 1st from her home. Her family is hopeful for her imminent release due to ongoing efforts.
Neighbors testified that the 85-year-old woman was arrested in handcuffs, and her son expressed concern about the lack of information regarding her incarceration. He mentioned that they have received updates through local support and that the French Consulate and Department of State are working towards her release.
The octogenarian had decided to settle in the US and marry an American veteran whom she had known for decades. After working as a bilingual secretary at a NATO base, they reconnected after being widowed. The veteran abruptly passed away in January at the age of 85.
Marie-Thérèse, who was awaiting a decision on her immigration status, was hoping to return to France after settling her affairs. Her son emphasized the family’s desire for her swift return. The Immigration Police, known for their strict enforcement policies, continue to face criticism under President Donald Trump’s administration.
