French President Emmanuel Macron’s announcement comes just hours before the enforcement of a blockade of Iranian ports by the U.S. military, decided by Donald Trump after failed negotiations with Tehran.
France and the United Kingdom are trying to find a solution to the crisis in the Strait of Hormuz. Emmanuel Macron announced on Monday, April 13, the holding of a Franco-British conference in the coming days to establish a “peaceful multinational mission aimed at restoring freedom of navigation in the strait.” The French President emphasized that “this strictly defensive mission, separate from the belligerents, will be deployed as soon as the situation allows,” as tensions rise between Washington and Tehran in the region.
Emmanuel Macron, who spoke with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Sunday, did not comment on the American decision of a naval “blockade” in this Gulf maritime passage, announced by Donald Trump after the failure of negotiations between the United States and Iran, set to take effect on Monday. In his message, the French President urged to spare “no effort” to “quickly achieve a solid and lasting resolution of the conflict in the Middle East through diplomacy,” to “provide the region with a robust framework for everyone to live in peace and security.”
