On Sunday, April 12, following the start of negotiations between Iran and the United States regarding the war in the Middle East, the American delegation left Islamabad, Pakistan. Both countries are accusing each other of the talks’ failure.

The negotiations between Iran and the United States regarding the war in the Middle East were tense and ultimately unsuccessful. During a brief press conference, American Vice President JD Vance, leading the American delegation, announced his return to the United States without reaching an agreement.

After 21 hours of discussions, he justified their failure by stating that the Islamic Republic had made no “firm commitments” regarding nuclear disarmament, as reported by several news outlets including BFMTV. He mentioned, “We are leaving here with a very simple proposal, an approach that constitutes our final and best offer. We will see if the Iranians accept it,” hinting that negotiations for a peace agreement could resume in the coming days.

“Nobody saw it coming”

On the other hand, Iran denounced the United States’ “unreasonable demands.” Iranian Foreign Minister Esmaeil Baqaei, a member of the Iranian delegation in Islamabad (Pakistan), stated that the success of the diplomatic process depends on the seriousness and goodwill of the other party, refraining from any excess and illegal demands, and accepting Iran’s legitimate rights and interests.

He further added, “It was clear from the start that we should not expect to reach an agreement in a single session. Nobody saw it coming.” Despite this, Pakistan, the mediator in these talks, urges both countries to observe the ceasefire agreement in place since Tuesday, April 7, for a two-week period.
